ANXIETY AND CANNABIS
ANXIETY AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Research shows that medical marijuana can be very effective for anxiety. While antidepressants and therapy sessions are beneficial to some people, increasingly, medical marijuana is starting to become part of people’s treatment for anxiety. Medical marijuana is an all-natural remedy which helps to combat the endless worrying and nervousness that comes along with anxiety disorders.
Feeling anxious in stressful situations is completely normal. However, for some, anxiety occurs so often and with such force that it begins to interfere with everyday life. It can appear in many shapes and forms and can be difficult to recognize when anxiety develops into a disorder. People who experience anxiety disorders often feel overwhelmed and have a constant worry or fear that is traumatic.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA: CBD AND THC
People suffering from anxiety are asked not to self medicate with recreational marijuana. CBD and THC are two natural compounds found in marijuana. Most often, recreational marijuana contains more THC rather than CBD. THC is more of a psychoactive compound, while CBD is not psychoactive according to a 2011 study.
Often times, it’s best to choose a strain of medical marijuana with higher concentration in CBD for medical purposes. THC is known to trigger the amygdala area of the brain which is responsible for fear, which can actually cause anxiety and paranoia.
However, both THC and CBD compounds together have many medical benefits which makes medical marijuana effective for treating anxiety.
Other studies have looked at the effectiveness of CBD to treat social anxiety disorders and found that CBD decreased anxiety. The subjects in the study were either given an oral dose of CBD or a placebo. The study found that the CBD significantly decreased subjective anxiety in patients suffering from social anxiety disorder relative to the placebo.
