Research shows that medical marijuana can be very effective for anxiety. While antidepressants and therapy sessions are beneficial to some people, increasingly, medical marijuana is starting to become part of people’s treatment for anxiety. Medical marijuana is an all-natural remedy which helps to combat the endless worrying and nervousness that comes along with anxiety disorders.

Feeling anxious in stressful situations is completely normal. However, for some, anxiety occurs so often and with such force that it begins to interfere with everyday life. It can appear in many shapes and forms and can be difficult to recognize when anxiety develops into a disorder. People suffering from anxiety are asked not to self medicate with recreational marijuana. CBD and THC are two natural compounds found in marijuana. Most often, recreational marijuana contains more THC rather than CBD. THC is more of a psychoactive compound, while CBD is not psychoactive according to a 2011 study.

Often times, it’s best to choose a strain of medical marijuana with higher concentration in CBD for medical purposes. THC is known to trigger the amygdala area of the brain which is responsible for fear, which can actually cause anxiety and paranoia.

However, both THC and CBD compounds together have many medical benefits which makes medical marijuana effective for treating anxiety.

A recent retrospective chart study of 72 adults at large mental health clinic in Colorado using 25 mg of non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) in capsule form primarily for anxiety found that 79.2% of them reported improvements. For those that remained the duration of the study the benefits continued. It went on to state that CBD appears to be better tolerated than routine psychiatric medications. Just 4.17% didn’t tolerate the medication well.
