Medical Marijuana is an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Humans are born with a “fight or flight” response to help make quick decisions in stressful situations. While most recover from this response, some people do not and ultimately develop post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, which negatively impacts daily life. If you are curious about using medical marijuana for PTSD, speak to your family doctor today for a referral to Canadian Cannabis Clinics across Canada today.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a severe form of anxiety disorder that develops after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event such as combat, natural disasters and sexual assault. It affects approximately 10% of Canadians and Americans at some point in their lives and can last for months or years after the triggering event. For some, medical marijuana for PTSD may be an effective method to relieve symptoms of re-experiencing the event, avoidance and numbing, hyperarousal and negative thoughts or mood changes. The various and intense symptoms of PTSD negatively affect every aspect of everyday life for those suffering, making the simplest of tasks incredibly difficult. At Cannabis Clinics, our expert team of doctors aim to educate patients, physicians and the general public on the impact of medical marijuana and PTSD, and find relief for PTSD symptoms.

Previous studies have shown that medical marijuana for PTSD has been successful in treatment-resistant cases. In these instances, the individuals involved did not find relief with pharmaceutical prescriptions, however, because of the cannabinoid receptors located in various places on the body and brain, they found relief of their physical and mental symptoms. Therefore both mental and physical symptoms can be relieved with medical marijuana. Furthermore, medical marijuana for PTSD has been known to effectively regulate sleep, pain, anxiety and stress, easing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Experiencing negative consequences of traumatic events is not unusual. The stress and anxiety typically last a few days or weeks. However, they eventually go away. If you have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and continue to feel the negative consequences of tragic events, speak to your family doctor about medical marijuana for PTSD today. How can medical marijuana help treat PTSD?

Medical marijuana consists of two separate compounds known as phytocannabinoid-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD), another major component of the plant. THC has also been shown to decrease the number of awakenings throughout the night. When THC degrades over time, it converts to a sedating chemical known as cannabinol or CBN. This cannabis compound is five times more sedating than THC and can be used in the form of cannabis-infused edibles or inhalation methods.

It’s also worth noting that edibles take longer to kick in than inhalation methods, but their effects can last several more hours and help you stay asleep much longer. Inhaled cannabis – preferably smoke-free vapour – generally provides an instantaneous effect and lasts for about three to four hours, whereas ingested cannabis can take up to an hour to work, but lasts for up to six to eight hours.  Therefore, an edible cannabis product, taken approximately an hour before bedtime, can work extremely well to help get a full night’s sleep and ease symptoms of PTSD.
