Medical Cannabis for ADHD
What is ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – or as we all know it, ADHD - is a chronic condition that affects millions of people around the world, causing a combination of persistent problems like difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and even impulsive behavior.
As one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood, ADHD symptoms can usually be observed from early childhood and might continue well into adulthood. Currently, professionals are not sure of exactly what the root cause of ADHD is. The latest research indicates that there are multiple causes related to being diagnosed with ADHD. One of the causes being genetics and the other being brain structure. Studies have shown that individuals are more likely to have ADHD, if their siblings or parents have been diagnosed with it. Additionally, studies have shown that those diagnosed with ADHD may have an imbalance in the level of neurotransmitters in their brain. This may explain familiar symptoms such as lack of concentration or inactivity.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ADHD cannot be cured. The good news however, is that the condition can be successfully managed leading to improved symptoms. One of the ways in which ADHD can be managed is through the use of medical cannabis.
If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, research has shown that medical cannabis can improve one’s concentration levels, reduce impulsivity and in hand, help those with ADHD.
Medical Cannabis and ADHD
There are many symptoms related to ADHD, some more serious than others. To name a few there are: hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsiveness and sleep issues. Often, such symptoms can lead to serious issues within people’s social lives so it is important that we take the right steps to alleviate some of these symptoms.
Traditionally prescribed ADHD medication has been used to subdue some of these symptoms but more and more patients are starting to explore the possible benefits of alternative treatments like medical cannabis.
Studies and findings on medical cannabis have indicated the possibility that both CBD and THC have anxiety-reducing and antidepressant benefits, making it a viable alternative to traditional ADHD medication.
How Can Medical Cannabis Help Treat ADHD?
Healthcare professionals have started supporting the use of medical cannabis to treat ADHD since it appears to be an option that might be able to treat ADHD in patients.
Perhaps you’ve heard that medical cannabis can cause a loss of focus in recreational users? Well, in ADHD patients, it seems like the opposite effect is observed. A 2008 study in Germany showed that cannabis might improve ADHD symptoms, possibly increasing the disposal of dopamine.
Research regarding the effectiveness of treating ADHD using medical cannabis is limited. However, a study was carried out which analyzed an online discussion forum regarding people’s experiences while using medical cannabis for ADHD. Out of the 468 participants, 25% of them believed that medical cannabis played a positive role in managing their ADHD.
